With all this talk of getting rid of your stuff, you may feel a little pressured and overwhelmed. If someone told us to get rid of 70% of our stuff, we’d lose our minds too. There’s no reason to throw out 400+ items unless you just want to.
So, what’s the alternative? You could throw everything away, or you could tuck it away into its proper place. If you don’t want to toss out everything, a good alternative is just to hide it. There are actually a lot of ways you can hide your clutter without getting rid of it. We may not want to get rid of that huge box of cords because we may need them again at some point. Throwing them away would just be irresponsible! Instead of tossing, store them in toilet paper rolls! It sounds weird, but trust us, it works.

Hide cords in a shower rod cover.
A plastic shower rod cover is perfect to hide unsightly cords. It also keeps them from wrapping up and completely tangling. Shower rod covers are available at most hardware or home improvement stores.
Install corner shelving.
If the corners of your rooms are empty, you have storage options. Corner shelving looks chic and modern, but best of all, it gives you extra space to store toiletries, knickknacks, books, plants, or whatever you want to display.
Get a rollout pantry.
A rollout pantry is incredibly convenient for a number of things. Some spaces can’t store items that are wide, but things like spices and small packets are easy to put in a rollout pantry. They’re also fairly cheap depending on where you buy them.
Invest in under-the-bed storage.
Some spaces are underutilized, but none more so than under the bed. Get some under-the-bed storage to hide sheets, towels, or anything else you want to keep out of eyesight. This works particularly well for kids’ rooms.
Purchase a foldaway desk.
This one is a little more expensive, but it’s worth it. A foldaway desk is perfect for a small space, or for spaces that have more than one purpose. Foldaway desks are pieces of furniture that fold up when you’re not using it, meaning you have more floor space. There’s no reason to throw away wrapping paper after Christmas, especially if there are a few yards left. Instead, stuff them into a garment bag and hang them up in the closet. The fact it’s in the closet means you have more floor space, not to mention your closet will look larger without stuff on the floor.
Use curtains to conceal open closets and pantries.
Do you want to keep the items in your pantry, closets, and end tables concealed but can’t because they don’t have doors? Curtains! Hang a curtain rod and pick whatever curtain you want. This also works great to create a little reading nook, if that’s your thing.
Hide recycling bins in cabinets.
If you want to hide your recycling bins, you can simply hide it in your cabinets using a sliding shelf. We wouldn’t suggest using this method of your garbage as it could get smelly, but paper, aluminum, and plastic products are alright as long as they’re washed out.
Get cubby holes and storage bins.
Storage bins with more than two are great for decoration and hiding clutter. You can choose different color bins and designs. If you get a nine-shelf unit, half can be cubby holes and the other half can be shelves to display pictures or store other items you use on a regular basis.
Purchase a shoe cabinet.
Shoes are one of the worst culprits of clutter. They can make an area look messy and even make it difficult for you to walk around. That’s why we suggest getting a shoe cabinet. There are plenty of versions on the market from simple to super sophisticated (although that comes with a sophisticated price tag, too).
Use furniture that doubles as storage.
There are plenty of ottomans on the market that double as storage. You can tuck away couch pillows, books, remotes, or whatever you want to keep hidden on a day-to-day basis. Plus, you’ll have a great little footrest or extra seat.
Store jewelry in a door mirror.
No, we don’t mean alter a door mirror to hold jewelry. There are actual door mirrors that double as jewelry storage. It’s a great place to hold longer necklaces that otherwise get tangled in a jewelry box. Plus, you can check out your outfit immediately after accessorizing.
Utilize shower rings to hold scarves on a single hanger.
Scarves can be a pain to store, and they can easily take up a lot of room when stored in a disorganized fashion. Shower rings are a great way to get all of your scarves in one place. Clip them onto a hanger and loop your scarves through them!
Install bookracks on dressers.
You may not have thought about your dresser and it’s potential. Well, there’s a lot there! You can install bookracks on the side of the dresser to hold papers, letters, or books. It’s space that’s already being used, so why not make the most out of it?
Store cables in toilet paper rolls.
Unless you have a hamster or another rodent, you may not know what to do with toilet paper rolls. Funny enough, they can be used to store things! Wrap your cables around three fingers and then stuff them into a toilet paper roll. Finally, place that in a basket for easy storage.
Purchase a vanity tool holder for your bathroom.
Most bathrooms get cluttered due to hairdryers, straighteners, curlers, and other tools. If they sit on the counter, it can look cluttered. A vanity tool holder is an answer to this problem. The ones we prefer hang on the cabinet under the sink.
Store technology and cables in cabinets.
Computer gather clutter—printers, speakers, and cables galore! Cabinets work well to hide all of that stuff. Store printers in pull out cabinets and stuff the cords into them. It’ll keep your desk looking organized, which could actually improve your quality of work.
Hide your router in a book cover.
This project will require you to destroy a book, but it could be worth it. Routers can be unsightly, but you can wrap it in a book cover. There are some caveats with this hack. Make sure your router doesn’t have vents on top. You’ll also need to make sure the antenna is sticking out or the Wi-Fi signal strength will drop drastically.
Use a decorative cake stand to organize the bathroom.
Instead of lining everything up on your bathroom counter, declutter by putting everything on a cake stand. Bonus points if you get one that rotates so you have access to everything in the cake stand at all times.
Store your charging cables.
Are your charging cables just hanging out? Put them in a box! You can put a power strip in a box and then put holes in the side. It’ll create your own little charging station without having a ton of visible cords. Not to mention, you won’t have to untangle them any time you want to charge something.

We may not use magazines anymore, but magazine file holders are still useful. Put important papers, letters, and other paperwork in the holders to get them off of your desk and countertops. It’ll keep them safe and probably more organized.
Install invisible bookshelves.
Invisible bookshelves use books as a shelf to hold other things (usually other books). It looks like the books are just stuck to the wall, which is pretty cool to see. There are plenty of DIYs online. Just make sure you don’t use a book you love as the bottom portion.
Get a vertical wine rack.
Wine bottles take up a lot of space, especially if you have cooking wine and drinking wine. Before long, you have several bottles just clanking around. A vertical wine rack will get them out of your way while still allowing for easy access.
Buy nesting bowls and cups for the kitchen.
The kitchen can get cluttered pretty quickly, but what can you do about it? Nesting bowls. Don’t buy anything that doesn’t stack easily. For things that don’t, put it in a storage bin in the cabinet so it doesn’t spill out. For example, bowl lids can go in a storage bin, so they don’t slide all over the cabinets.
Use a shower curtain with pockets
Small shower? We’ve all suffered from a tiny shower with practically no shelving, but that’s why people created shower curtains with pockets. It keeps you from stacking everything outside of the shower or unnecessary caddies.
