Can You Name These Gross Old Foods?
Today, we don’t really have weird foods. At least, not like we used to. In the ‘90s, we had things like purple and green ketchup, Orbitz soda, and plenty of other foods we probably shouldn’t have eaten. Only God knows what was in them, right?! Well, even though we may have eaten some of those foods (and we still don’t know what’s in them), that’s the same sentiment we have for food that we see in cookbooks from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s.
Let’s be honest: some of the food looks astonishingly gross. That’s mostly because we don’t use the ingredients in the same way. Most of us know Jello as the delicious cherry, strawberry, or orange-flavored dessert that we spray whipped cream over. That’s definitely not what it used to be. If anyone flips through a cookbook from the ‘50s, they’ll see that Jello and gelatin were something people used to suspend meats and fresh vegetables—not fruits. Lettuce and ham sound delicious suspended in celery flavored gelatin, right?! We didn’t think so, either.
Along with these gross-looking old foods, they tend to have names that make it even more disgusting. We think the word “surprise” should be omitted from any dish because no one really wants to be surprised by the ingredients. Are the names of these foods as gross as we think or are we just making mountains out of molehills?

Pickle Stretcher Salad
That’s unmistakably pickles, making this a Pickle Stretcher Salad. Even with how much we love pickles, we’re not going to eat them with olives suspended in Jello.
Prune Whip
Okay, so, salmon whip does sound nastier, but prune whip isn’t much better. It’s cooked prune puree folded into egg whites. That’s a recipe for food poisoning.

We still style food today, but we don’t ever want to see liver formed into a pineapple using cheese.

Wishing it was ham? It’s Spam. Not far off, but strange enough to make it a hard no for us.

This pie plate salad looks pretty dang bad. Canned mixed veggies suspended in gelatin would make Gordon Ramsey lose his mind.

Both sound bad, but this is tomato-banana tarts. Huge pass.

Please be strawberry, please be strawberry. Nope! This is a shrimp sandwich roll. Pureed shrimp with breading and an olive in the center.

Aspic is a savory Jello. Savory Jello shouldn’t exist.
Poor Man's Gravy
Poor Man’s Gravy is also known as “Red-Eye Gravy.” It’s made using coffee, which sounds pretty gross until we tell you that you can also make it using soda.
Ham and Banana Hollandaise
The ingredients don’t seem horrible until you combine them. Why on earth would you combine bananas, ham, and hollandaise sauce?
Cheeseburger Pie
Nothing says healthy like making a pie out of a cheeseburger. Top it with globs of cheese and have an ambulance on standby.
Lime Cheese Salad
Grab yourself some lime Jello, mix in some chili, fold in some cottage cheese, and garnish with peas. Since you’re using a Bundt pan, the center can be filled with seafood salad! Yum!
Glazed Potato Salad
Preparing food for a party? You know what that means: it’s time to make a “glazed” potato loaf topped with mayonnaise! Just schmear that mayo all over it.
