15 Fashion Trends People Love to Hate
As they say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and this definitely rings true in the world of fashion. Since things change so much, it opens the chance for there to be plenty of fashion trends that don’t hit the mark. I mean, when was the last time you saw something walk across the runway and thought, “Yeah I’d wear that.”
Looking away from that, even things we see in everyday life can turn people away. But that being said, there are some trends that tend to get more hate than others. While some seem to be unfairly targeted, others are spot on – we’re looking at you Uggs. While we’re on the topic, who in the world invented shutter shades? We’re gonna have to say no on that one. These styles have few friends, and that situation doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon.
If you’re looking to hate on a few things, here are 24 fashion trends that many people love to hate. Maybe it’s because it looks stupid or maybe it’s because waaaaay too many people wore the trend. Sky-High Heels
Sky-high heels, otherwise known as “stripper heels,” are great for a fun night out with the girls. They’re not so appropriate for the rest of your life, though.
Short Shorts
People hate on this trend for a very specific reason: Even if you’ve got it and want to flaunt it, not everyone wants to see everything you’ve got. There is a tasteful way to rock this look; opt for high-rise shorts or shorts with a little breathing room in them and pair with a cute pair of heels (for a night out) or sneakers (for running errands).
Stacked Jewelry
Wearing lots of layers of jewelry can be seen as excessive; you’ve probably heard that rule about taking one accessory off before leaving the house, right? Well, forget it. Accessories make the outfit, so layer ’em up!
Floral Patterns
Floral patterns get hated on because they can look a bit matronly and dated. But floral patterns can be super chic when worn the right way. A simple floral pattern paired with ripped jeans or the right pair of shoes takes the look from noon-tea to night-on-the-town.
Cargo Pants
Cargo pants are GROSS on dudes. They’re baggy, they have an absurd amount of pockets, they’re pretty much the opposite of everything fashion stands for. But when women wear them, tight and cropped at the ankle, they’re actually super cute. Yet another thing women do better than men!
Chokers
A few years ago chokers were seen as a major ’90s fashion don’t, but they’ve somehow worked their way back into mainstream fashion. This is proably due to the variety of chokers we have now; unlike in the ’90s, we aren’t limited to pairing a plastic black choker with a tie-dye t-shirt; now, we have leather chokers, lace chokers, beaded chokers, long chokers, layered chokers, etc.
Peasant Tops
The Peasant Top first came to be in the ’60s. It was kind of the hippie fashion staple, usually paired with a flower crown, flared jeans, and bare feet. It’s made a major comeback, for reasons we’ll probably never be able to identify.
Crocs
We’ve tried to take up for most of the misunderstood trends on this list, but Crocs are where we draw the line. They’re just gross.
Peplum Tops
Peplum tops are typically hated on by men who either 1) don’t “get” them, or 2) can’t pronounce “peplum.” Truth is, peplum tops are a great way to accentuate your curves. Plus, you can dress them down in a cotton peplum or up with leather or lace!
Leggings as Pants
We’re sure you’ve heard the infamous “leggings aren’t pants!” line that so many people love to say when they see someone wearing a pair of leggings with a too-short top. We partially understand this sentiment, especially with cheaper leggings that use very thin, low-quality fabric. However, with the rise of athleisure and the thick, structured leggings that have come with it, some people are arguing that they are indeed pants! Now, you can buy thicker, high-quality leggings that work great under a short dress or long top.
The landscape may be better than it was for leggings fans five years ago, but this garment is still a prime target for derision.
Crop Tops
Many people hate crop tops because they think they expose too much, and if you wear them with low-rise shorts, they’re absolutely correct. But if you wear a crop top with a high-waisted skirt or jeans, this style can be quite classy!
Harem Pants
Any type of pant with a drop crotch is bound to get some hate. Most people just aren’t a fan of feeling like their crotch is almost to their knee caps! Although, there are some harem pants with an ever so slight drop crotch that may make you think twice about boycotting this trend. (Plus, they’re SO. COMFORTABLE.)
Lingerie as Everyday Wear
Corsets, bustiers, and silk robes are now officially considered acceptable to wear outside the house, but a lot of people think that this type of lingerie is simply inappropriate to wear in public. Agreed, it is a bit more sensual than most types of clothing, but if styled properly, this trend can look quite stunning.
Rompers
Is it a dress? Is it shorts? We may never know. This sense of ambiguity is what has turned many people off from wearing rompers. That, and the fact that the “shorts” portion of the romper is typically a bit too short for most occasions. But, there’s a time and place for everything, such as a night out in Cabo.
UGGs
We thought the ugly Uggs died out years ago, but now some celebrities are bringing them back. Despite the fact that these boots are unbelievably warm and comfortable, they are not very attractive to look at. Yet, if it’s ten degrees outside and you have somewhere to be, we doubt you’re going to care very much about how they look.
Ripped Jeans
Ripped jeans have had a bad rap for a while, particularly after schools started banning them. We’ll concede that there are many pairs of these jeans that are more “rip” than “jean,” which is ridiculous—but a little distressing and one or two rips can look stylish, especially when paired with the right accessories.
Wedge Sneakers
Many people wonder, “What on Earth is the point of wedge sneakers?” And we have to agree. Sneakers are typically worn during exercise or when you just want to look cute and comfy, so why take the comfort away with a wedge? It defeats the whole purpose!
High-Waisted Pants
Called “mom jeans” or “mom shorts,” this trend may not ever appeal to low-rise lovers. They see this style as old-fashioned, but if they actually tried on a pair, they would quickly realize that not only are high-waisted jeans infinitely more comfortable, they’re also more flattering because they accentuate the hourglass shape.
Platform Shoes
Platform shoes are the new heels. They’re comfortable while still adding a little height, but a lot of people cannot get over the fact that they look so 1970s. We say that anything higher than 2 inches is too much, but up until that point, these shoes can be quite chic!
Pantsuits
Pantsuits are often regarded as stuffy and old-fashioned. We have to agree that the traditional pantsuit is ill-fitting and unflattering, but modern pantsuits can be quite empowering for women everywhere.
High-Low Skirts
Also called the “mullet skirt,” this style is constantly showered in hatre. We have to agree that this style of dress or skirt looks unnatural and a bit tacky, but there are a couple versions that aren’t so bad! As long as the high-low transition is very subtle, it can be pulled off.
Overalls
Many people argue that overalls completely mask your figure and make you look like you should be working on a farm. For some pairs of overalls, this rings true. Yet, with the abundance of new styles out there, such as those made from soft knits, they can be very flattering and stylish.
Flare Jeans
Flare jeans officially made a comeback, but some people still aren’t on board with this trend. Some argue that these jeans are too dated or not very figure-flattering, but there are some modern styles that may change your mind—such as high-waisted flares paired with stilettos.
